goodbye tampons

Recently I was thinking about how I made the choice to switch to eco-friendly and organic period products. The term "free-bleed" comes to mind. From my second period ever until a couple years ago I would always use "Tampax Tampons." I heard about she.thinx a few years ago and thought "i could never," until I did some more research and learned that my toxic tampons could be contributing to my cramps. not to mention, that absolutely awesome feeling of when you take a tampon out and you’re not really bleeding still…. yep, feels great.

I made the switch to the products below and have not looked back. When I do want to wear a tampon I go for an organic brand. It takes time to adjust to the feeling of not wearing a tampon, but i feel more connected to my flow, aware of what is going on, and present with what my body needs… plus, I no longer have cramps (disclaimer: there are many other things I do to not have cramps, switching products is just one piece of the puzzle*).

she.thinx: woman owned, my favorite version of these period undies is the hi-waist

keep in mind that there is a learning curve when using these and most pairs only hold 1-2 tampons worth. they now sell pairs for your heavier days. extremely easy to clean, rinse with cold water after use, hang them to dry then toss in the wash with all your other clothes. I own three pairs and they get me through the first half of my cycle during the day, I even wear them to work!

L. - also women owned. Every pack of period products you buy, another is shared with someone in the world who needs it. I have used both their organic tampons and their pads. you can buy subscription services for this brand or find at target.

natracare- founded by Susie, really comfortable organic pads. they made the first ever organic tampon! practically zero plastic wrapping with the pads as well.

azalea(for whole foods)- my favorite tampon if i choose to use one.

modibodi-  i have not tried personally but it is women owned and they have a seamless pair of period undies and period-proof swimwear!! recent updates: friends report loving these

menstrual cups- the link here will lead you to the best source of info for CUPS. they have a quiz to help you determine which cup is for you, instructional videos on how to insert, and reviews. Cups are great because you don’t have to take them out as frequently as a tampon (no concern for TSS).

saalt: this is my first menstrual cup + i love how soft it is! Super comfortable and easy to use + on their site they do a great job of highlighting how cups reduce WASTE. look for a full blog soon about my experience with the saalt cup.
